Old Man Football In a pass happy era "old man football" still wins football games during the BDFL's annual Throwback Week GREEN BAY - Before his death in 1983, Chicago Bears legendary owner and coach George Halas was asked by a reporter who was the greatest running back you ever saw play the game. Halas responded, "That would be Red Grange." When asked if Grange, known as the Galloping Ghost, was still playing today, how many yards do you think he'd gain in a season? Halas said, "About 750, maybe 800 yards per year." The reporter responded, “Well, 800 yards is good, but not great by today’s standards.” Halas sat up in his chair and he said, “Son, you must remember one thing. Red Grange is 75 years old." Grange and 1926 New York Yankees (Wildcats) pounded the original 1921 Acme Packers (Gamblers) 32-19. Another legend of the day was Jim Thorpe who led the 1921 Canton Bulldogs (Dogs) over the '62 Dallas Texas (Armadillos) 41-38. A legend in his own time, Red Grange was a man among boys in 1926 |
