BDFL to honor the Continental Football League in 2017

TITLETOWN - As part of the 2017 BDFL season, the league will honor the Continental Football League (CoFL) as part of their annual Throwback Week celebration. During Week #6 action, each BDFL team will represent a former CoFL team. The CoFL operated in North America from 1965 through 1969. It was established following the collapse of the original United Football League, and hoped to become a major force in professional football outside of the NFL and AFL. Though the CoFL never rose past AAA football, many pro football legends including Doak Walker (Akron Vulcans), Bill Walsh (San Jose Apaches), Kenny "Snake" Stabler (Spokane Shockers), Sam Wyche (Wheeling Ironmen), Lee Grosscup (Hartford Charter Oaks), Johnnie Walton (Indianapolis Capitols), Garo Yepremian (Michigan Arrows), Coy Bacon (Charleston Rockets) and Otis Sistrunk (Norfork Neptunes) all logged time in the league as a player, or coach. Others associated with the league in a management role included Jackie Robinson (Brooklyn Dodgers), Red McCombs (Mexico Golden Aztecs) and A.B. "Happy" Chandler (Commissioner). The BDFL will honor the 1967 CoFL season since this will be it's 50th anniversary. On a personal note, when Iron Hand was seven years old in 1968, I remember my Dad taking us to see the Alabama Hawks with former Crimson Tider Paul Crane, on loan from the New York Jets, play a game somewhere in Birmingham.
